As an integral part of Chinese zodiac culture, China’s rabbit culture boasts a long history and rich connotations, and manifests the unique way of thinking and aesthetic taste of the Chinese nation. As early as the Neolithic Age, the Lingjiatan Culture already had jade carvings in the shape of rabbit. A nephrite rabbit stood out the unearthed cultural relics of the Shang (1600-1046 BC) and Zhou (1046-256 BC) dynasties for its extraordinary craftsmanship. The ancient book Rui Ying Tu said, “Red rabbit symbolizes supreme blessing, and white rabbit moderate blessing.” White rabbits were rarely seen in ancient times, so they were regarded as an auspice of good luck. Once white rabbits were found, they would be delivered as tributes to the royal court. According to Book of Han, white rabbits were tributed to the emperor three times during the Han Dynasty (202 BC-220 AD), and they were considered rare animals emerging only in the reigns of benevolent monarchs.

The design of Ru Porcelain Joyful Rabbitdrew inspiration from the mural on the caisson ceiling of the No. 407 Cave of the Sui Dynasty (581-618) in the Mogao Grottoes in Dunhuang, China. The mural depicts three rabbits in the center of a lotus flower. The three rabbits chase each other, and they are interconnected to form a loop, creating a fantastic visual effect that they share ears. Besides, they are in concert with the surrounding lotus flowers and flying Apsaras on the outermost ring. It seems that the entire caisson ceiling was revolving alongside them. Patterns of rabbits with shared ears are found in many places around the world. From 600 to 1500, such patterns were spread to three continents along the Silk Road and introduced to the four major religions of Buddhism, Islamism, Christianity and Judaism. They were transmitted from China all the way to Britain and other European countries. Today, how the pattern of three rabbits with shared ears originated remains a mystery.

A saying goes that “rabbits get weight when the moon is full”. A symbol of dignity, the joyful rabbit is fat but adorable and appears like flying in the air. Instead of the usual design of the standing Jade Rabbit pounding herbal medicine, it models after the jumping rabbit among the “three rabbits with shared ear” in the Dunhuang mural, alongside the pattern of a horse stepping on a flying swallow. It shows the rabbit runs fast, full of vitality. Its long ears extend backwards, as if it were riding the wind. The forelegs of the adorable rabbit hold together in the front, as if it were making a bow to extend Spring Festival greetings. It conveys good wishes for the new year, bringing delight both mentally and physically.

The joyful rabbit pleases the eye and gladdens the heart. It can be used in various scenarios. For example, it can serve as an increase burner or a tea lover’s pet, and it can also serve as an ornament in the study. Either way, it conveys the elegant charm of the East.

Rabbit-shaped ornaments symbolize blessings, while red coins signify good luck, success and wealth. The joyful rabbit with agate glaze features azure color and is as smooth as jade. The red acrylic pads in the shape of ancient round coins carry the character “Tu” (Rabbit) in the seal script written by Chen Hongshou, an eminent calligrapher in the Qing Dynasty (1666-1911). A joyful rabbit is placed on such a pad, symbolizing that it stands on a blessed land under a wealthy canopy. This design conveys the prayer for wealth and good luck in 2023 or the Year of the Rabbit.

Ru Porcelain Joyful Rabbitintegrates elements such as Dunhuang culture, Chinese Zodiac culture, and Chinese calligraphy, and demonstrates the endless charm of Chinese culture. The jade-like rabbit, together with the well-proportioned Chinese character, is running towards us as Spring Festival draws near.
